Year 7 maths

In year 7, arithmetic extends to negative numbers, fractions and powers, letters take the place of numbers, and geometry gets precise definitions.

The structure is based on the Finnish national core curriculum for basic education (POPS 2014). The core curriculum sets the content for years 7–9 together, and each municipality divides it between the years in its own local curriculum. This map covers the content that belongs to year 7 in most municipal curricula. Year 7 in other countries (for example Year 7 in the UK) may be at a quite different level.

1. Numbers (1–3). Integers and their sign rules, divisibility and fractions, then decimals, rounding and percentages.
2. Powers (4). Repeated multiplication gets its own notation and its own rules.
3. Algebra (5). A letter in place of a number: expressions, simplifying them, and linear equations.
4. Geometry (6). The coordinate plane, points, lines and angles, polygons, and perimeters and areas.
