Percentage

Per cent means hundredth: \(1\,\% = \frac{1}{100} = 0{,}01\). Percentages express shares and changes in a way that makes them easy to compare.

• Three forms. \(40\,\% = \frac{40}{100} = \frac{2}{5} = 0{,}4\).
• A percentage of a number. Multiply by the decimal form: \(40\,\%\) of 35 is \(0{,}4 \cdot 35 = 14\).
• Percentage share. Divide the part by the whole: 14 out of 35 is \(\frac{14}{35} = 0{,}4 = 40\,\%\).
